WIGSTON STREET NAMES INDEX NOW ONLINE ON THE GREATER WIGSTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY WEBSITE
Wigston Framework Knitters Museum is a Master Hosier’s house with a two story Victorian frameshop in the garden. The house dates from the last years of the seventeenth century and shows signs of various alterations. At the rear is a cobbled yard and a water pump. A two storey workshop extension has been added to the rear of the house.
The brick floor of an earlier frame shop can be seen inside the Yarn Room; not unusual for this part of Leicestershire, with its long tradition of worsted knitting. The museum is unique, because when the last master hosier, Edgar Carter died in 1952, the workshop was locked and left. Inside on the ground floor were eight hand frames for making gloves, mitts and fancy ribbed tops for golf hose, together with all the moulds and tools associated with each machine. There is a large garden, well stocked with flowers, shrubs and fruit trees. Saturday Opening at the Museum.12th October 2024.
The museum is to continue to trial opening on selected Saturdays. It is some years since the museum opened on Saturdays and it was a lack of demand that caused it to stop. Times have changed and there is now a whole generation out there whose interests and aspirations are different. Visitors have asked us why we don’t open on a Saturday and have expressed an interest.
Our first Saturday opening in September 2024 was extremely successful. So we are going to open again on Saturday 12h October 2024 between 1pm and 5pm. Usual guided tours and light refreshment available.
Please come along and support us.
The museum offers volunteering opportunities and there are a number of tasks which need to be completed to enable the museum to function. These include maintenance, housekeeping, administration, guiding and gardening to name but a few. If you are interested in becoming a part of this small museum, then please call in and see us. We are open Sunday afternoons and frequently Tuesday afternoons for maintenance. There is no obligation and the tasks are not onerous.
